Fordingbridge Show 2002
Rodlease Jubilation & Rodlease Minuet

Suzanne writes: Since being at Bull Hill farm I have had the privilege of running the well known Rodlease Stud for
Miss Avril Darnton. Up until the late 90’s the stud had produced some very well known New Forest ponies
including Rodlease Fiesta - a prolific winner both in hand and ridden for many years.
Luckington Ludo
was the resident stallion up until his death at the age of 32 in 2002, remaining fertile until the very end.
Ludo himself was responsible for many performance ponies , in fact on one memorable occasion three of his progeny were representing the New Forest Pony Enthusiast’s Riding Club at the National Riding Club Show Jumping Championships.

Many of the Rodlease stock over the years have been exported abroad
and their names are often to the fore on the Dutch and Finnish New Forest Pony websites.

In this country we still have many direct descendants of  Rodlease ponies doing extremely well in all disciplines including Perrone Palaver ( out of Rodlease Playtime) who qualified for the Horse of the Year Show 2003,
and Havenstreet Sweet Sensation (out of Rodlease Sweetheart) winning affiliated showjumping classes.

Upon our arrival here we have been able to bring the Rodlease name back into the limelight having had a few quiet years,
with a lovely filly foal Rodlease Jubilation.
This chestnut filly – a granddaughter of Rodlease Fiesta - has really lived up to her name,
winning prolifically as a foal with her dam Rodlease Minuet and carrying on to win six out her eight classes as a yearling.
Now four years old, she is developing into a lovely riding pony, enjoying forest rides
and the occasional ridden class for the experience.

Update: September 2004
We have had a very successful year with the Rodlease ponies, in particular with Jubilation who has continued her winning form from last year. This year she has been top two year old filly each time bar once and has otherwise only been beaten by colts or older fillies.  The season for her has now finished but the highlights have included :  winning her class for the 3rd successive year at the breed show adding her name onto a trophy previously held by both her mother and grandmother, winning at the New Forest and Hants County Show and winning the youngstock championship for the 2nd successive year at Romsey.

CONGRATULATIONS!!

Rodlease Gloriana
Rodlease Gloriana has now gone to a lovely family home and is happily taking her new young owner
out on forest hacks as well as teaching him the finer rudiments of riding

We have had two super foals ; a grey / roan filly Rodlease Dawn Magic out of Linford Speciality by Applewitch Pure Magic and Rodlease Tango a full brother to Jubilation. Tango has been much admired by the owners of a top stud in Denmark and all being well in October will be leaving us to join the Stutteri Elmholt www.stutterielmholt.dk

From  school I went straight to Porlock Vale Equitation Centre to train as a Working Pupil. At that time 'white glove' grooming inspections were the order of the day and standards in all areas of riding and horse care were extremely high.
Here at Porlock I attained my BHSAI.
The high standards of Porlock stood me in good stead for the following three and a half years in a private show jumping yard with the late Baron Eric de Wykerslooth. Firstly for two years in Belgium and then for a further eighteen months in Sussex when the whole Belgian set up moved here to England.

'Earl Grey'

The Baron was a perfectionist in the schooling of quality young horses, having spent his own formative years with the d'Inzeo brothers and Nelson Pessoa. I was lucky enough to be the Baron's rider following his own retirement and spent three wonderful years breaking, schooling and jumping a huge variety of lovely quality horses.
In need of broadening my horizons away from the show jumping circuit I then spent eleven years at the Fortune Centre of Riding Therapy, not only riding, and teaching BHS students, but also running the RDA section. Mixed in with this was more breaking and training of New Forest ponies as well as competing at BHS Horse Trials and showing! I was also closely involved in teaching a young lad over from the Island of Sark - Carl Hester, and accompanied him to many of his first competitions as ' box driver, groom and coach'!!. I gained my full BHSII during this time.

In 1988, I married Patrick Kempe and after the arrival of our
son Andrew set up as a freelance 'Equestrienne'

I am on the committee of the New Forest Pony Enthusiasts Riding Club,
not only as 'Vice Chairman' but also as Chef de Equipe for their jumping teams.
